After Black Friday: how to turn first-time buyers into repeat customers
By Toby Dames. Published 5 November 2026.
The risk
A first order at 30% off tells you someone likes a bargain. It does not tell you they like your brand. If your follow-up is only more discounts, you train them to buy only when there is one.
Before the sale
- Make sure the welcome and post-purchase flows are live.
- Tag sale customers so you can treat them differently later.
- Decide the full-price reason to return: a new arrival, a refill, a complementary product or a service.
After the sale
- Week 1. Delivery updates and how to use the product.
- Weeks 2 to 4. A suggestion of what goes with it, using what they bought.
- Around the time they are due. A reminder to reorder, if the product runs out.
- After the usual gap. A win-back message for those who have not returned.
Measure it
Compare the second-order rate of this cohort with other cohorts and, if you can, with a small hold-out group. In January you will know whether your sale buyers became customers.
Questions
Should I discount again in January?
Try it without a discount first, and compare. If you do offer one, aim it at the customers who need it, not everyone.
Is it too late to set this up before Black Friday?
A basic post-purchase sequence and a win-back flow can often be live within a couple of weeks. If you are short of time, build those two before anything else.
